Good news: I found the problem. Nothing’s worse than tearing apart pieces of your car to not find anything. Especially when you’re basing it off a guess. An educated one, but still.
Bad news. There’s oil in the expensive part of the optispark. No (relatively) cheap and easy cap/rotor swap. Oh well. Going to try cleaning it and replacing the oil seal. Might work. Will likely need to spend $500 anyways. In for a penny...
Good news: taking this opportunity to delete the air pump and add new wires/plugs. So much more power. At least 20 internet hp.

There's a seal around the optispark driveshaft that is leaking evidently. The water pump seal looks fine.

Gotcha. Might want to just throw the fel-pro kit at it anyway?

The OE Optispark # 19212300 is on Rock Auto for just over $300. Dealer is around $700 for same. Make sure you get both seals for the water pump coupler as well as the gaskets if you end up doing it. You do have a 94-96 LT1 if I recall?

Perfect time for an LS (or Northstar) coil-pack conversion.

96. My dad ‘upgraded’ to a msd unit and wiring. So I’m unsure if going back to OEM is worth the hassle without the core refund.
ordered the WP with gaskets when I figured it was what caused the opti failure but, always good to have insurance.

Don’t get mad at me but I just want to make sure you know this. NEVER EVER pressure wash an LT1 . I can’t remember all the times we had cars towed into the dealership dead because of someone cleaning an engine. A little Gunk degreaser and a garden hose maybe. As many Optisparks as I’ve seen die I’d even be afraid to directly hit it with that. We had one guy back two years in a row, some people don’t learn the first time.
In more recent years its been the 5.3 Silverado guys cleaning an engine after mudding and gettin’ water past the knock sensor seals under the intake.

Still runs off the opti sensor. The rotor and cap are fine actually. My dad even got the north star packs, but since I’m not building it to dist. rotor destroying revs I don’t feel a great need to replace it.
